Peace

The word peace may ring a bell
Tis a far-off foreign sound.
But it strikes our ears with peals that tell
Of calmness and strength that abound.
Oh, evasive, elusive, obstinate peace
Fleeing far when I need you most!
Must your calm waters always cease
When I am so near to your coast?
Where does peace go when she wishes to hide
From this depraved and needy world?
Can she be extracted from riches and pride-
Paid with jewels finely pearled?
No, none of these can conquer dear peace
For she’s bought with Jesus’ blood.
And in God’s child this calm will increase-
So let peace come like a flood!
