The World at our Fingertips

She sets down her phone, a small, rectangular piece of technology that makes you feel like you’re holding the world at your fingertips. This small rectangular box holds the means of communication, latest news about the world, locations and which direction to go from wherever you may be, entertainment via YouTube videos or other streaming services to watch your favorite movies and television shows, keeping up with your friends and family through social media, and other helpful tools such as a flashlight, maps, a compass, clock, calendar, health apps to schedule appointments, keep up with incoming prescriptions, and so many more things. You can do research on the most random things.

Some people use their phones in different ways. They may not like all the apps that are on there like maps or GPS. Before this current generation, paper maps were used and some men she know still keep plastic calculators in the breast pocket of their collared shirts as well as red pens or pencils. Men and women and children now have advanced technology to keep up with their health with almost any common chronic illness such as diabetes (an app that sends signals to the user who may have high or low glucose levels, letting them know to take glucose or narrow it down. She knew a girl she went to school with who had type 1 diabetes, and she had an app on her phone to let her know to take her glucose or to tell her that something was wrong.

She uses her phone to play her favorite songs or videos while she does homework or one of her favorite hobbies (whatever that may be). This truly beats having to carry a giant boom-box or radio with her so she can listen to music or hear the news. It sits there, new notification popping up about who friended you on Facebook, if your game has refilled it’s life sources so you can play again, a text from your mom asking you what time you’re coming home from hanging out with your partner or friends, a calendar notification telling you it’s time to go to therapy or the doctor’s office, and many more things. The world is at your fingertips, do not abuse that privilege.
